Charges for driver test fraud

An ICBC-approved translator is accused of helping hundreds of people cheat on driving knowledge tests, CTV News reports.

An investigation by the RCMP and ICBC alleges Amjed Jamo, for a fee, directed hundreds of mostly Arabic speakers to the correct answers with codes and hand gestures.

Of the close to 300 drivers that had to re-take their test as a result of the investigation, a quarter failed a re-test. Some licenses were voided.

“It’s disturbing,” Kurtis Strelau of Young Drivers Canada told CTV “Driving is a serious business.

“This affects their decision-making, their understanding of the rules of the road. If you’re looking over here and the car is coming from over there, that’s a recipe for disaster.”

CTV News says ICBC also prosecuted another translator in November. Inderjit Singh Sandhu, of Vernon, pleaded guilty to making a false or misleading statement in connection to a smaller case.
