Sickly seal pup rescued

An emaciated seal pup is on the mend at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre after being rescued by fish farm workers near Campbell River.

The pup, nicknamed Mo, was unable to dive and floating sideways when staff at the Mowi salmon farm alerted Fisheries and Oceans Canada on Monday.

The sickly seal was flown by Pacific Coastal Airlines to Vancouver, where rescue centre staff are caring for it, CTV News reports.

“She’s dehydrated and severely underweight, which indicates she is failing to thrive after being weaned, but she’s feisty, which is a hopeful sign," said assistant manager Emily Johnson.

The centre hopes to rehabilitate and release Mo back into the wild.
