Tent camp levelled

A large tent city was levelled in Nanaimo, Monday, as its residents moved into modular homes.

Heavy machinery cleared the downtown waterfront site as dozens of homeless moved into two new BC Housing projects.

The sites include round-the-clock support staff, cooks, and security, CTV News reports.

"Friday there was a young man who, as soon as he came in, called his mom and started crying, and was saying 'Mom, I got in, I'm accepted, I finally have a home,'" Angela McNulty-Buell of site operator Pacifica Housing told CTV.

Remediating the site is next on the city's agenda.

Outreach workers plan to locate any tent camp residents who have not yet been given a home.
