Irish hikers saved

Another pair of unprepared hikers has been rescued from frigid conditions in B.C.

A pair of Irish hikers were rescued from Mount Seymour's Dog Mountain Sunday evening after they lost their way in the dark without warm clothing, supplies or a flashlight.

North Shore Rescue responded to the emergency call just after 5 p.m. Sunday, and managed to locate the hikers using the GPS signals from their phones.

Leah Corbally and Lee Kirwan thanked the North Shore Rescue team for the assist.

"We were able to get the latitude and longitude," search manager Allan McMordie said. "It wasn't very good accuracy, so we weren't quite sure where they were, but we knew coming off of Dog Mountain, they'd probably get down into the Boulder Creek area."

Even though the weather has been good, the sun is setting earlier after the time change and as soon as the sun goes down conditions change quickly.

"We expected just a hike up and back down," Kirwan said after they were escorted down the mountain. "On the way back down we took a wrong turn and went about half an hour in the wrong direction."
