Heli needed to fix webcam

Next time you get frustrated because the mountain-pass DriveBC webcam you rely on is offline, consider this.

The Paulson Summit webcam on Highway 3 is back up and running after a helicopter ride to a nearby mountain top.

To repair the webcam an engineer had to visit the radio repeater site on Mount Mackie, a task that had to wait for clear weather to ensure safety.

“Mountain pass webcams are challenged in maintaining connectivity, because most are out of cell network range and there are no available landline connections,” the Ministry of Transportation said in a Facebook post this week.

For the Paulson webcam, the image is transmitted via radio to a mountain-top radio repeater station and then “hopped” over to a cell network that sends the image to the DriveBC camera system.
