Altercation leaves 1 dead

Port Coquitlam Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating after one man died as a result of an overnight altercation.

The incident happened on November 4, 2018 at about 5:44 a.m., after Coquitlam RCMP received a report of a disturbance at a residence in the 2300-block of Atkins Avenue in Port Coquitlam.

When police arrived they found a man with serious injuries and another man was arrested at the scene in connection with the attack.

The victim was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

IHIT has now taken over the investigation and has been working closely with Coquitlam RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the B.C. Coroners Service to gather evidence.  An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Investigators have determined that this was an isolated incident and that those involved knew each other.  There does not appear to be any further risk to public safety.

“Detectives will be methodically going through the crime scene, collecting all the forensic evidence available,” says Corporal Frank Jang of IHIT.  “IHIT will be conducting an extensive canvas of the neighbourhood for video surveillance footage and witnesses.”

Anyone with information, who have yet to come forward to police, is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at [email protected]
