Camp handed cleanup bill

Residents of a homeless camp in suburban Victoria have been handed a bill for almost $2,000 for site cleanup.

After being forced from a site along Pat Bay Highway, the campers moved to Cattle Point in Oak Bay Wednesday night.

On Thursday, Oak Bay Police served notice that local bylaws prohibit camping in public parks.

"What the public has said is they really didn't want us anywhere near really close to houses, and we're not," said spokesperson Chrissy Brett. "We're not near a playground. When we were here last time, we were over by the cenotaph, and Oak Bay didn't like that very much so we listened, and we're back."

Police handed over an invoice for "costs associated with previous activity in Oak Bay" totalling $1,882.65 for clean-up costs and remediation.
