Arrest after border evasion

Police in Vancouver arrested a man in his 20s who allegedly crossed the border into Canada without stopping on Saturday.

The Vancouver Police Department was alerted by Surrey RCMP just before 8:30 a.m. that a blue Ford Ranger with Oregon plates evaded border guards and entered Canada, heading towards Vancouver.

VPD officers found the truck near West 16th Avenue and Oak Street, and pursued the driver after he refused to pull over.

The driver crashed into a Mazda sedan several blocks later before crashing into an empty retail store. The 32-year-old male Vancouver resident driving the Mazda sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Police arrested the suspect driver after the crash and took him into custody.

Charges related to dangerous driving and causing a police pursuit are being recommended, VPD Const. Jason Doucette said, with more charges likely to be pressed.

"Efficient communication between agencies led to the swift arrest of this man who made unauthorized entry into Canada," Doucette said. “Investigators are now working with our partnering agencies to determine who this man is and why he ran the border.”
