Speculation tax in crosshairs

The B.C. speculation tax is back in the crosshairs.

Both BC Liberal Leader, Andrew Wilkinson and Greens leader Andrew Weaver have recently taken shots at the much-maligned tax, even as the government admits the tax will have the largest impact on B.C. residents.

In an open letter Andrew Wilkinson says "municipal leaders are the ones who know their communities best, and it’s time the NDP government started listening to them."
Wilkinson made the comments during his address to the Union of B.C. Municipalities Convention.
Wilkinson called for a return to a provincial-municipal relationship like the one under former premier Gordon Campbell. “We believe that if there’s a local problem, local government knows best how to fix it,” said Wilkinson. “The provincial government’s role is to provide support and it has been extremely disappointing to watch the NDP ignore you and proceed to download costs with no extra funding or assistance.”

Andrew Weaver echoed those same sentiments and with the fall legislature session approaching quickly this issue is likely to come to head soon and could spell disaster for the NDP.

Weaver and the Greens currently hold the balance of power and a collaboration between the Greens and the Liberals on the issue could spell the end of the NDP government if forced to a vote.

Kelowna mayor Colin Basran and West Kelowna mayor Doug Findlater have both expressed their displeasure with the tax and have vowed to continue to fight against the tax.
