Call to ban plastic bags

Municipal leaders are calling on the province to ban plastic shopping bags.

Delegates at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler unanimously supported the resolution on Thursday.

Victoria has already banned single-use plastic bags, and more and more stores are beginning to ditch plastic.

The Ministry of the Environment said in response: "The issue of plastics in our environment is one of the fastest growing environmental concerns" and "prevention of waste remains a key priority for B.C.'s approach on plastics."

But, it appears consumers will be the ones leading the drive as more shoppers choose reusable bags before any provincial regulations come into effect.
