A Modo car-share Nissan Versa was mangled in the crash, which happened just before 3 a.m. on Arbutus Street.
Speed is believed to be a factor, as the driver lost control and struck a retaining wall near West 33rd Avenue.
The driver, a 30-year-old man from Burnaby, died at the scene. His passenger, a 32-year-old man from Langley, was rushed to hospital with minor injuries.
The crash closed down Arbutus Street between West 32nd Avenue to Quilchena Crescent while police investigated the scene.
