The family of a young woman almost killed when a car ran a red light in Surrey last year is outraged at the driver's sentence.
Manjit Singh was handed a six-month conditional sentence on Thursday and will serve the first three months under house arrest. He'll be allowed to continue working and was given a one-year driving prohibition.
Singh also fled the scene of the crash, but was turned in by a roommate when police canvassed the neighbourhood.
Rhaea Grant, 20, was walking in a crosswalk at King George Boulevard and 96 Street when she was hit on Oct. 20, 2017.
"My daughter's life has been altered forever and to be quite frank, he gets a slap on the wrist," said her mother Gillian.
"I was very surprised to find out this is a normal sentence for these types of crimes, and that's what it was – a crime. He chose to leave."
Rhaea suffered life-threatening injuries, and her life will never be the same, her mother says. She suffered multiple fractures, internal lacerations and a tear in her heart.
A GoFundMe campaign for Rhea has raised more than $8,000.
