Fire threatens city

UPDATE 12:10 p.m.

Efforts to battle the Meachen Creek fire threatening Kimberley and the St Mary's Valley area are making headway early Friday afternoon.

BC Wildfire Services Fire Information Officer, Travis Abbey tells Castanet, "we flew over the area this morning, it's smoked in as I know you guys are too and the good news is there is minimal growth so far today, that's positive for sure."

Fire crews are now working to develop containment lines today. Conditions right now are too poor for water bomber planes so they are setting up large tanks filled with a mixture or retardant and water which the helicopters can use to beat back the flames.

Abbey says they have requested additional resources, "an incident management team to help coordinate the efforts and structural protection experts and crew to help protect homes in the valley bottom. We are feeling much better about things this morning than we were last night."

UPDATE 6:50 a.m.

The Meachen Creek fire is threatening the City of Kimberley and has reached almost 6,000 hectares in size.

Overnight winds gusting up to 40 km/hr increased fire activity Thursday evening and pushed the fire north.

The safety of the residents of the St. Mary Valley, Kimberley and the safety of BC Wildfire Service crews remains the first priority for fire crews.

A perimeter scan identified that the Meachen Creek wildfire has not merged with the Mount Dickson wildfire at this time.

An evacuation order has been issued by the Regional District of East Kootenay in the St. Mary Lake area from the west boundary of the City of Kimberley to the Redding Creek/St. Mary River convergence including St. Mary Lake Road and Lakefront Road. The City of Kimberley is on evacuation alert.

The cause of this fire is believed to be lightning.

BC Wildfire personnel continue to assess this fire.
