Nanaimo wildfire grows

A wildfire burning near Nanaimo has grown to 179 hectares in size.

The Nanaimo Lakes fire is 25 per cent contained and mostly growing away from the city.

The Regional District of Nanaimo has declared a local state of emergency as the blaze burns out of control.

An evacuation order is in place for those west of the fire – so far, only campers – while 77 homes to the east are on evacuation alert.

Meanwhile, a wildfire that sparked Tuesday night near Lacey Lake, northwest of Port Alberni is estimated to be five hectares in size.

And a new wildfire broke out Wednesday in the Cowichan Valley – the fourth to hit Vancouver Island in the last few days.

It's located at Maple Mountain, near Crofton, and is estimated at 1.10 hectares in size.

Local fire departments and the BC Wildfire Service were responding Wednesday afternoon.

Three of the fires are suspected to be human-caused.
