Orca impacts fireworks?

Some Comox residents are concerned their Festival of Lights show scheduled for this coming holiday Monday, may have an adverse impact on a lone orca that has been making the harbour home since July 23.

Liforce ocean Friends founder Peter Hamilton says "this orca has brought a rare opportunity for the citizens of the Comox Valley and elsewhere to enjoy the beauty of wild orcas... We owe it to him to stop a dangerous nighttime congregation of boaters that could harm both him and boaters. The boaters would be where the orca has been travelling. The orca appears stressed and exhibits agitated and aggressive behaviours. His unpredictable behaviour poses a threat to himself from injuries such as life-threatening propeller injuries and threats to boaters from collision and other interactions. He has recently grabbed a sailboat anchor and briefly towed it around.”

The planned Festival of Lights on Aug. 6 in Comox Marina Park will bring a large number of boaters to the Comox Harbour, which the orca has been calling home for more than two weeks.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is now on scene to help enforce a 200-metre "no-go" zone around the orca.

Recently, New Zealand postponed a fireworks display because there was a lone orca in a harbour there.

Hamilton adds, “I hope that the mayor and council will consider moving the fireworks display out of the harbour to Air Force Beach, where it had been held years ago.”
