2 charged in major theft ring

Two people have been charged in connection to a "large retail theft operation" in the Lower Mainland, which was investigated by Surrey RCMP for more than a year.

Alan Smith and Kimberly Gascon are both facing charges of theft under $5,000. Smith is facing several additional charges, including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, trafficking in property obtained by crime, assault of a peace officer and obstruction of a peace officer.

Police in Surrey had arrested two people in March 2017 who were alleged to have stolen merchandise from clothing stores and resold the items online.

The arrests were made after police recovered $122,000 worth of stolen goods, as a result of search warrants executed in a condo in Surrey, a rented storage locker in Maple Ridge and a vehicle allegedly used to transport the stolen goods.

Earlier this month, the condo and vehicle linked to the theft ring were forfeited, and their net proceeds, totalling $102,000, were paid to the BC Civil Forfeiture Office.

“The scale of this particular forfeiture should serve as a warning to those pursuing similar activities in Surrey," Mike Farnworth, the province's Solicitor General and Minister of Public Safety, said in a news release.
