No way to treat a chicken

An Abbotsford egg farm has been decommissioned following disturbing video of conditions there.

The BC Egg Marketing Board says the chickens will be removed, and the barns cannot be used for egg laying.

"Those facilities are no longer meeting with the 2017 codes of practice, so they're no longer suitable," spokesperson Katie Lowe told CTV.

Animal activists released video from the Jaedel Enterprises farm last month which showed dead and live birds crammed into cages, and others buried up to their necks in manure.

The Egg Farmers of Canada conducted an animal care audit with the help of veterinarians, and the BC SPCA also launched an investigation.

Three farms were examined, and hens were found to be in good health at two of them. The third, Jaedel, did not meet BC Egg's standards.

"We are extremely disappointed," the board said in a statement.

"Our industry has a zero tolerance policy for any mistreatment of animals, and strict policies and procedures that must be followed in order to be an egg farmer in this country."
