1 displaced in apartment fire

A small fire in a low-income Vancouver apartment left one resident displaced on Friday night.

The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the building located in the city's Railtown neighbourhood, and needed a significant response from fire crews.

“Because there were physically handicapped people in the building, we made it a second alarm right away, just if we needed help getting people out,” Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services Battalion Chief Mike Huntley told CTV.

Thanks to the large response, firefighters were able to knock down the blaze quickly.

One resident was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Fire crews were also exposed to bedbugs inside the apartment, and had to decontaminate their gear afterwards as a precautionary measure.

The apartment, Veterans Memorial Manor, is home for 133 men, mostly seniors. Many of the residents are physically disabled or deal with mental health issues.
