Coroner investigates

UPDATE 12:15 p.m.

An early morning fire in the Lynn Valley area of North Vancouver has tragically claimed the lives of two people. The fire broke out at approximately 2:30 a.m. Monday night at a two-story apartment complex in the 2000-block of Whiteley Court.

Fire crews arrived to find the building fully engulfed by flames and in spite of aggressive efforts the structure could not be saved and it was several hours before police and fire personnel could safely enter the burned wooden structure.

The bodies of the two victims, both from the same family, have been removed from the scene as of Monday afternoon.

The age and identity of the victims have not been released.

The fire is under investigation and the BC Coroners service has been called in as well.

Approximately 12 other injured residents had to be taken to hospital for treatment as well.

There is extensive damage to the 17 units of the fire-ravaged building. Approximately 70 residents have been permanently displaced from the apartment building.

Two people have died in an apartment fire in North Vancouver.

Fire officials say 16 others have been taken to hospital with various injuries, ranging from minor to severe.

The blaze broke out at about 2:30 a.m., in the 170 unit Mountain Village Garden Apartment complex.

Sixteen suites in two of several buildings in the complex are destroyed.

Firefighters say 150 residents were evacuated but many have been allowed to return because their buildings were not involved.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined. (Global)
