Carriage fall sparks debate

Debate has reignited over Victoria's carriage horses after video posted to social media shows two fallen horses struggling to get back on their feet.

The video shot at Ogden Point and posted to Facebook by Victoria Horse Alliance, shows the horses lying in the road as handlers try get them up.

After several minutes, onlookers cheer as the horses are helped back up.

Critics of the carriage trade say the industry should be banned.

"It was pretty heartbreaking to see," Dave Shishkoff told CTV. "Just the horses lying down, collapsed, struggling to get up ... they were in distress for a long time."

But, Victoria Carriage Tours says video doesn't show the whole story.

The company says the horses slipped while trying to back up, but couldn't because a bus was too close behind them.

"Our horses are trained to stay down once they realize they can't get back up on their own," said trainer Emily May. "The horses were not injured at all, either in that moment, visibly to our experts, or when checked by the vet the next day."
