Crime spree ends in arrest

Civilians helped apprehend the suspect in a short-lived crime spree in Vancouver, Tuesday.

The suspect allegedly stole a purse, a van, and robbed a restaurant before he was detained.

The first incident occurred at 3:20 p.m., when a 64-year-old woman had her purse grabbed from behind on Main Street, near East King Edward Avenue.

Police say the male suspect took off with the purse after a brief struggle that knocked the woman to the ground. She was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

About five minutes later, a 1999 Toyota van left running was stolen on Main Street, near East 19th Avenue.

Finally, about an hour later, a male suspect allegedly grabbed money from an open cash register at a restaurant on Kingsway, near Fraser Street.

When the man fled, two witnesses chased him down and held him until police arrived. The witnesses suffered minor injuries in the altercation.

Walker Franciscas Frijters, a 23-year-old man from Calgary, has been charged with six offences, including assault with a weapon, robbery, and assault causing bodily harm. He is currently in custody.
