Gov't warns rabbit owners

Several weeks after hundreds of rabbits were found dead in the Nanaimo area, the province is warning rabbit owners about a fatal disease spreading through the critters in B.C.

The virus, called rabbit haemorrhagic disease, has now been confirmed in rabbits in Nanaimo and Delta. The province said testing is also taking place for rabbits recently found dead in the Comox Valley.

The disease only affects European rabbits, and can be spread as easily as through the air. It can't be contracted by any other animals, including North American rabbits, nor by humans.

Infected rabbits can die suddenly from the virus, the province said, but it may also take between one to nine days for symptoms to set in. There is no known cure for the disease, which causes rabbits blood vessels to rupture.

The outbreak of the rabbit disease is the third to occur in Canada and the first in B.C. Officials aren't sure how it first reached Vancouver Island.

Rabbit owners seeking more information are advised to contact their veterinarian or to visit the SPCA's factsheet on the disease, which can be found here.
