Ex-mayor faces sex charges

The former mayor of Burns Lake and membership chair of the BC Liberal party is facing charges related to several sex crimes.

Luke Strimbold, 28, has been charged with 24 separate counts and the Burns Lake RCMP is investigating the possibility of additional victims.

He was arrested on Feb. 3 and released on several conditions to avoid areas frequented by children, reports the CBC.

Elected in 2011 at age 21, Strimbold is the youngest mayor in B.C. history. He resigned in 2016 to spend more time with his family and business.

In a news release, the RCMP say the allegations occurred in 2016.

In a brief statement Friday, the BC Liberal Party said it became aware of the allegations via social media on Friday afternoon.

"Mr. Strimbold has now resigned as membership chair and as a member of the party," the statement reads.

Strimbold also sat on the rules leadership committee during the recent race to replace Christy Clark.
