Assault of recent immigrant

An unprovoked attack against a recent Syrian immigrant in Surrey in November has resulted in assault charges against one man.

Marc Nijjer, 52, is alleged to have elbowed an 18-year-old boy, who had recently arrived in Canada, in the face without provocation on Nov. 16 in the Newton area of Surrey.

Cpl. Scotty Shumann of the Surrey RCMP said at the time that they reached out to the family to offer support and show they were welcome in Surrey's diverse community.

"A simple assault can have a profound impact on a new person to the country," Shumann said.

Over the course of the months since the incident, police used public information to help identify their suspect.

"Thanks to assistance from the public after an appeal was made to help identify the suspect, officers were able to forward the investigation,” Schumann said.  “Police are grateful for any help, no matter how insignificant it may seem.  Sometimes that little bit of information is all that’s needed to solve a crime.”

Nijjer is scheduled for his first court appearance in Surrey Mar. 8.
