No more pets for pig eater

There will be no more adopted animals for a B.C. resident who ate a pot bellied pig that was picked up from the SPCA.

The unidentified resident, who adopted a pig under false pretenses then slaughtered and ate it, has been banned from receiving any more animals from SPCA branches in the province.

According to spokesperson Lorie Chortyk, that is all the SPCA is able to do.

"Because they were the legal owners of the animal after the adoption and it is not illegal in Canada to eat animals for food, we have no legal recourse to recommend any charges," Chortyk told CTV News in a statement.

Molly the pig was among 57 animals seized during a Vancouver Island cruelty investigation last year.

Staff are extremely upset by the fate of the pig that they thought was going to a forever home.

If there were charges that could be applied to the adopter, officers would pursue them, Chortyk said adding it's particularly heartbreaking because SPCA staff spent months nursing the dozens of pigs back to health after they were seized.
