Man dies snowmobiling

A  52-year-old Nanaimo man has died snowmobiling in the backcountry near Whistler.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon near Mt. Callaghan near the Callaghan Lake Provincial Park area of Whistler.

It appears the cornice the man stopped on top of collapsed and he fell 250 feet.

He was partially buried when other snowmobilers came to his rescue.

Other snowmobilers were able to dig the man out and begin CPR.

Whistler Search and Rescue rushed to the area by helicopter with a doctor, but despite the best efforts of everyone involved the man died at the scene.

The cause of death has not been confirmed, however, it does not appear suspicious, according to police.

No further details are available at this time.

Avalanche Canada had advertised that the hazard in the alpine was deemed to be ‘moderate’ at the time but had recommended people give cornices an extra wide berth.

The man's death comes with a warning from Whistler RCMP and SAR for people who are recreating in the backcountry to use caution, particularly around cornices.
