Big blast of snow coming

Highway 1 is about to get another big blast of winter.

A winter storm warning has been issued by Environment Canada, with up to 50 centimetres of snow expected from west of Revelstoke, through Glacier National Park and into Kicking Horse Canyon.

A Pacific frontal system is spreading snow over the Central and Northern Interior, and the Columbia regions. The snow will intensify this evening and continue through Wednesday. Total accumulations of 30-50 cm are expected by Wednesday evening.

The snow will ease Wednesday night as the system moves southward and weakens.

Motorists are being urged to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult and road closures are possible. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. People are reminded weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

Highway closures for avalanche control are expected through the same region.

Current road conditions are available at www.drivebc.ca.
