High avalanche danger

Extreme caution is urged in the B.C. high country this weekend.

Conditions are ripe for an avalanche in Vancouver's North Shore Mountains, and a high avalanche danger is also flagged for B.C.'s North Coast, Cariboo, North and South Columbia, and Purcell Mountains.

Alberta's Glacier, Jasper, Banff, Yoho and Kootenay National Parks, as well as the Lizard Range and Flathead area are also at high risk.

Steady rain at the Coast today and rising freezing levels has created "a great recipe for avalanche activity," Avalanche Canada says.

That risk is expected to drop to "considerable" at higher elevations, Saturday and Sunday.

A "high" rating is considered very dangerous, with natural avalanches likely and human-triggered slides very likely.
