Brown booby visits Victoria

A rare tropical bird has washed up on the coast of British Columbia.

The brown booby is a rare tropical bird not normally seen in the cool, damp Pacific Northwest. But one washed ashore, virtually in downtown Victoria.

A female brown booby about two years old was found with a puncture wound in its chest at Ogden Point earlier this week on Monday.

The tropical birds are typically found in California, Mexico and Hawaii and it's rare for them to be spotted on the south coast.

The brown booby is known for making massive dives for fish from up to 15 metres.

The rare booby is now recovering at an Animal Rehabilitation centre in Metchosin.

It's the first time the organization has cared for a brown booby.
