Blue bridge standing tall

It's the beginning of the end in Victoria.

CTV Vancouver Island is reporting the final major puzzle piece for the new Johnson Street Bridge will be lifted into place this weekend – as long as high winds don't impact the work.

A crane, known as the Dynamic Beast is needed to lift the 46-meter-long bridge deck span into place at dawn on Saturday.

"The Dynamic Beast" was moved into position Friday morning and the bridge will be shut down to traffic while the work proceeds.

However strong winds are forecast for the weekend and that could impact work.

The bridge, known in Victoria as the "Blue Bridge"  is iconic because it was designed by Joseph Strauss and the Strauss Bascule Company Limited, which held the patents on the design, prepared the design for the bascule spans and the operating machinery. Joseph Strauss later went on to design the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The new bridge is three years behind schedule and around $42-million over-budget, but it will essentially look complete once the span is in place. The official opening won't be until March.
