Giant waves pound Island

Waves as high as 9.5 metres slammed the west coast of Vancouver Island on Thursday.

The winter storm produced some of the largest waves seen in a decade.

Environment Canada issued a gale warning for the region, and the District of Tofino closed all its beaches due to the hazardous conditions.

Ucluelet also closed several beaches, and Pacific Rim National Park issued an extreme wave hazard advisory.

Ocean Networks Canada said it was the largest storm its models had ever seen, said Karla Robison, Ucluelet's environmental and emergency service manager.

Barricades and warning tape went up on trails between Ucluelet and Tofino, and beaches will remain closed until further notice.
