Fake gold scheme busted

Two men have been arrested after a fake Chinese gold scheme.

A man was told he was purchasing “priceless” Chinese artifacts, but discovered they were fake.

Police were contacted by the victim on Dec. 21., and the Richmond RCMP Economic Crime Unit linked the case to a second incident in Surrey.

Canada Border Services Agency and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office were also involved in the investigation, said ECU Cpl. Marco Sallinen.

Cpl. Adriana Peralta said the scam was also pulled in Japan, Singapore and the United States.

Dejin Xu, 52, and Zhong Yang, 49, were arrested Saturday and charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 each.

Both men are Chinese nationals and currently remain in custody.
