Double fatal on Sea to Sky

The Sea to Sky Highway was closed for several hours Tuesday while police investigated a double fatal collision.

RCMP Cpl. Elizabeth Lynn said the crash happened about 7:30 p.m. on Highway 99, at the Cheekye River Bridge between Squamish and Whistler.

“Upon arrival, it was determined that a northbound pickup truck, being driven by a lone occupant, crossed the centre line and collided with a southbound minivan, with seven occupants,” said Lynn.

“It was subsequently confirmed that the driver and one passenger from the minivan were deceased at the scene.”

Four of the five remaining occupants suffered injuries from minor to serious, but non-life-threatening. The fifth minivan occupant was transported to hospital and remains in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup is in serious condition in hospital.

The highway was reopened about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
