Arson assumed after 3 fires

Police in Delta are on the lookout for an arsonist after three early-morning fires that were set in close proximity, all of which are being deemed suspicious.

The first fire call came at about 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, when the Sungod Arena sign was torched.

The next came about 30 minutes later, when a vehicle had been set ablaze in a nearby neighbourhood.

Finally, an hour later, fire crews attended another vehicle that was on fire in a carport — minutes away from the previous two locations — which forced a family to flee their home.

"These situations have reached far past just straight vandalism. They are putting people's lives at risk," Delta Police media relations officer Sharlene Brooks said to CTV.

No arrests have yet been made in relation to the incidents, and police haven't confirmed if the three fires are connected.

Brooks recommended that residents leave their outside lights on at night, and observe who is in their neighbourhood.

"If you see anyone suspicious, doesn't belong in your neighbourhood, call the Delta Police immediately," Brooks said.

"It's better to be safe than sorry."
