$9,000 in phony bridge tolls

A Maple Ridge man said he was stunned upon receiving a massive bridge toll bill dating back six years, even though he and his truck were out of town during many of the crossings.

Jeffrey Hann is on the hook for just over $9,000 dollars worth of unpaid tolls from crossing the Golden Ears Bridge between Maple Ridge and Langley, from 2011 until August.

That's more than 1,200 crossings, the majority of which he said were billed incorrectly.

Hann tried to renew his truck's insurance and was told he still owed money for bridge tolls.

He called Quickpass for more information, as he believed he was up to date on payments.

“She said, ‘Oh, you have a substantial bill.’ Ok, what is it? ‘It’s $9000.56.’ I asked her if she was kidding," Hann said.

Hann is a sheet metal worker, and said he can track projects he has worked on.

He has spent a lot of time working in places like Kitimat, the Sunshine Coast and Trail.

“I’m in camp in 2013 on my birthday, but they have me crossing the bridge three times that day."

When asked, neither ICBC or TransLink could answer why the incorrect charges weren't flagged earlier.

Of the bill issued to Hann, $3,535.35 is interest.

Hann said he is willing to pay for the times he actually crossed the bridge on his bill.

"Why should I have to pay for their errors?
