Suspect nabbed in field

Police tracked a suspected thief to a Surrey berry field after they were alerted to a vehicle fire Sunday evening.

About 6:30 p.m., RCMP responded to reports of the fire on the 3200 block of 176th St. (Highway 15).

Witnesses say a male was observed pushing a wheelbarrow full of items away from the burning vehicle, which police determined was stolen from the Maple Ridge area and had eluded police earlier in the day.

Staff Sgt. M.A. Hedderson said vehicle was associated to a number of break and enters in which firearms were stolen.

Officers established a perimeter and with a police dog tracked the suspect north along 176th.

Meanwhile, residents called 911 to report the suspect attempting to steal another vehicle and force his way into homes. At one of the residences, the man stole a bicycle and attempted to ride it through berry fields to elude capture.

The male was arrested after a struggle in the fields.

A 37-year-old man of no fixed address is in custody and faces several charges.
