Campfire ban coming

Campfires will be banned in parts of the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction starting Thursday.

The prohibition is to help prevent human-caused wildfire and public safety.

Campfires will be banned in the Cariboo-Chilcotin Forest District west of the Fraser River and throughout Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park. The use of tiki torches, chimneys, air curtain burners and campfires must be extinguished at noon on Thursday.

“These prohibitions apply to all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but do not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws in place and is serviced by a fire department,” said Natasha Broznitsky, information officer.

The remainder of the Cariboo Fire Centre is not under a ban.

Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition can be issued a ticket for $1,150 and could face a administrative penalty of $10,000. If convicted in court the individual could face up to a $100,000 fine or be sentenced to a year in jail.

The Cariboo Fire Centre is currently experiencing dry conditions and elevated fire danger ratings of high to extreme with a small pocket of moderate.

To report a wildfire or unattended campfire call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.
