Driver killed in crash

UPDATE: 4:45 p.m.

Highway 1 has been reopened.

RCMP confirm this morning's head-on crash between two semi-trucks on the Trans-Canada Highway near Revelstoke was a fatality.

Cpl. Mike Wasylenki of Trans-Canada East Traffic Services says a 51-year-old male truck driver was killed in the collision.

The driver who was killed was in the eastbound semi, while the driver of the westbound semi and a passenger suffered serious injuries.

According to police, the collision happened at about 9:05 a.m., east of Revelstoke, near the west entrance gate of Glacier National Park.

The westbound semi crossed the centre line, colliding with the eastbound truck.

The westbound semi caught fire.

A third eastbound semi and an SUV were also involved the collision, with occupants suffering minor injuries.

It's unclear why the truck crossed into oncoming traffic.

It's expected Highway 1 will reopen at about 5:30 p.m.


UPDATE: 12:55 p.m.

Four people were injured – one critically – in a horrific crash on Highway 1 near Revelstoke.

BC Emergency Health Services says it's treating four patients, one critical, one serious and two in stable condition.

Five ambulances and one air ambulance responded to the crash, which happened before 10 a.m. about 50 kilometres east of Revelstoke.

The highway is expected to be closed in both directions until about 7 p.m.


UPDATE: 11:10 a.m.

A fiery crash involving three semi-trucks and an SUV has closed Highway 1.

A photo from the scene shows the heavily damaged vehicles involved in a head-on collision about 50 kilometres east of Revelstoke.

It's unclear how many people were hurt and the extent of their injuries.

A witness says an air ambulance has arrived on scene.

The highway is expected to be closed all day.


UPDATE: 10:45 a.m.

Highway 1 is now expected to be closed all day because of a crash.

A traffic analyst is on the way, says DriveBC. But the highway is not expected to reopen until 7 p.m.

There is currently no detour.

A crash has closed Highway 1 in both directions from Revelstoke to Golden.

The highway is expected to be closed until 3:30 p.m.

There is no detour.
