Bacon brother released

One of the three Bacon brothers is back in the community after being convicted of conspiracy to traffic cocaine in 2012, despite his own objections.

Jarrod Bacon was sentenced to 14 years in jail in 2012, minus time served, which put him up for statutory release this February.

Bacon has been transferred to a halfway house to serve out the rest of his sentence, despite him arguing it will put him in danger.

Parole Board documents show Bacon objected to the move, but the board was not convinced.

“You were involved in street gangs and organized crime while you were a member of the Red Scorpions and the Bacon Brothers,” board member Michel Lalonde said in the ruling. “At that time, you were known to have considerable influence on the gang environment, and violence is implicitly linked to this environment."

In his argument for not being moved to the halfway house, Bacon noted his eldest brother, Jonathan, was killed in a mid-day shooting in Kelowna in 2011.

A Kelowna judge, meanwhile, decided Thursday that evidence found on a gang member's BlackBerry phone would be admissible in two upcoming gang-related trials, including Jason McBride's, who is accused of killing Jonathan Bacon.

Jarrod Bacon was released on several conditions, including avoiding anyone involved in drugs or crime, but the parole board documents noted he has kept gang connections while incarcerated.

"Security information about your associates indicates that you kept yourself in a position of influence. Obviously, this raises serious doubts about your genuine desire to rehabilitate yourself and lead a life free from criminality," the parole documents state.

The third Bacon brother, Jamie, is charged with first-degree murder in the 2007 Surrey Six killings, and is currently awaiting trial.
