Fire erupts at mill

Revelstoke fire crews jumped to action Tuesday night after the Downie Timber Ltd. mill caught fire.

The fire took off at 9:45 p.m., activating the mill's sprinkler system.

“Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke pouring from the rear of the compressor building and sprinklers activated,” said fire Chief Rob Girard. "We immediately ventilated and had an attack crew enter the structure for the fire attack.”

There was no one in the building when crews arrived.

Girard says the sprinkler system performed well, containing the fire to the area of ignition.

Within 30 minutes, the 17 firefighters had extinguished the blaze.

“Our hats are off to the great staff and management at Downie Timber Ltd. who helped us when we first arrived right through to mop up" said Girard. "We all realize how important this facility is to the community".

An electrical issue with one of the large compressors at the mill is believed to have started the fire.
