Cat cafe closed for meow

A successful day for cats has put feline fanciers in Vancouver into a momentary pit of despair.

Vancouver’s first ever cat café has temporarily shut its doors as they are unable to showcase felines up for adoption.

The Catfé, which operates out of the International Village Mall downtown, is so successful it was able to adopt an overwhelming number of cats out to forever homes in the first three weeks of operation. The Catfé has rendered itself catless.

A message on the café’s website indicates they have simple run out of cats, which is quite the catastrophe for cat lovers.

Catfé owner Michelle Furbacher writes the aim of the business is to have anywhere between eight and 12 cats at the café, which will fluctuate as cats get adopted out and more cats arrive.

“Over the next week, as a result of steady adoptions paired with holiday hours and bad road conditions for our Northern cat transfers, our partners at the BC SPCA have been low on cats to send to us,” she explains online.

New cats are set to arrive soon; yet Furbacher is excited that so many felines have found their forever homes in such a timely manner.

“We also look forward to providing a fun, cat-filled space in the near future with lots of new feline furriends to meet.”

However, just because the Catfé is catless doesn’t mean there is a shortage of adoptable cats in the Lower Mainland. The business has partnered with the BCSPCA, and the society only sends the most social felines to be adopted.

Furbacher encourages those wanting to become a guardian to check out other local rescues such as Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association, Richmond Animal Protection Society, Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) and Katie's Place Animal Shelter, to name a few.

Catfé touts itself as a cat lover’s dream: a cafe serving cat-themed treats and a shop filled with crafty meowchandise —all in the company of feline friends.

The success of the café has also meant encouraging patrons to make reservations before arriving.
