Inferno was hard to fight

An Oliver structure fire Monday was made more difficult to fight by the nature of the business and the age of the building.

Alpha Truss was destroyed in the raging fire, which was fuelled by all the lumber inside the manufacturing plant. The former packinghouse was also insulated with wood chips and sawdust.

The heat was so intense at times that firefighters had to back off because they were putting themselves in danger, said Rob Graham, media relations officer for the Oliver Fire Department.

Graham said firefighters arrived at the scene off Highway 97, about 3:45 p.m. Using a first responder truck, they sprayed water on the building.

Most department members remained on scene until 7 p.m. Another fire truck, crew and excavator remained at the site.

The owner of the building could not be immediately reached for comment.

Alpha Truss is a long-existing business, which provides roof trusses to a large area in Southern B.C.

The loss is expected to have a big impact on area contractors, Graham added.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
