A vehicle fire on the Coquihalla closed the highway south of Merritt, late Monday afternoon.
The car fire was in the southbound lanes, about 15 kilometres south of the city, near the Coldwater exit, according to VSA Road Maintenance.
It spread into the dry, grassy median, stopping traffic on the tail end of the busy B.C. Day long weekend and creating huge lineups.
Seven B.C. Wildfire Service personnel responded to the blaze, which was contained to the centre median and did not spread to the surrounding forest.
Traffic was reopened to a single lane at the fire and, according to VSA, the scene was cleared about 6 p.m.
