Another police shooting

The Independent Investigations Office has been called to the scene of a police shooting in Surrey.

About 2:30 a.m., RCMP responded to a suicidal male in the area just outside the District 5 RCMP office on 152nd Street in South Surrey.

The man appeared to be in significant distress, and a physical struggle followed with attending officers.

Police ended up shooting the man, who did not survive his injuries.

An RCMP officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, the circumstances of which are under investigation.

The officer was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, IIO investigators remain in Dawson Creek following another officer-involved shooting on July 16.

In that incident, officers were responding to an unrelated disturbance at a rally opposing the Site C dam when they came into contact with an adult male wearing a mask who approached in an aggressive manner.

According to police, he did not comply with directions and was subsequently shot. He also did not survive.

A knife was recovered at the scene, along with other evidence.

Interviews have been conducted with witnesses, and investigators are reviewing video evidence from businesses.

The IIO is not commenting on the number, gender or years of service of the involved officers in either case, or the identities of the deceased.

The Surrey incident is the sixth officer-involved shooting under investigation by the IIO since April 1.
