Hep A outbreak at school

An elementary school in Surrey, is holding an immunization clinic after an outbreak of hepatitis A.

Fraser Health released a letter to parents on Friday about cases of the virus at North Ridge Elementary School.

The letter says some students and staff may already be ill or develop symptoms over the next six weeks depending on when they were exposed.

The school will hold a vaccination clinic on Monday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Hepatitis A is a serious viral disease of the liver, spread through improper hand-washing, that causes diarrhea, vomiting and jaundice.

Fraser Health says children with hepatitis A often have more mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
