Avalanche control on Trans-Canada

A portion of the Trans-Canada Highway will be closed for a few hours this afternoon because of avalanche control.

Highway 1 will be closed to traffic in both directions between 3-5 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

The closure will affect an 18-kilometre stretch of road between Revelstoke and Sicamous, extending west of Revelstoke approximately 26 kilometres from the town.

Environment Canada is also forecasting heavy snow over the next 24 hours along that stretch of highway.

They say a significant winter storm will bring a total accumulation of up to 25 centimetres of snow, and northeast winds gusting between 40-70 kilometres per hour from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass.

Travellers are advised to use caution and to be prepared for quickly changing road conditions.
