Witnesses sought in fatal crash

RCMP in Surrey are seeking witnesses to a fatal motor vehicle collision Monday evening in Newton.

The pedestrian motor vehicle incident was reported about 7 p.m. in the 13700 block of 76th Avenue.

A 62-year-old male was believed to be walking eastbound on the south side of 76th Avenue when he was struck by a GMC pickup that was exiting a grocery store parking lot.

The victim was taken to hospital with what initially appeared to be a minor head injury. However, his condition quickly deteriorated and the man was pronounced deceased.

The 44-year-old male driver of the truck stayed at the scene and is being co-operative with police.

Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team is investigating the incident, and speed or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors. It was the city’s first traffic fatality of 2015.

Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to call 604-599-0502, quoting file 2015-16191.
