Coquitlam fire crews are working to contain a large fire that has already destroyed at least one business.
The fire sparked around 1:30 a.m. Thursday in a strip mall on Barnet Highway near Ioco Road.
Fire crews initially started attacking the fire from inside a restaurant but had to pull back when the roof started to collapse.
"We won't be able to make entry into this building for some time until we get the fire out," said Coquitlam Fire Chief Wade Pierlot. "The roof is partially collapsed now and we've got really a big burning pile of debris in that part of the strip mall."
Officials say the restaurant is a write-off and there is also damage to some neighbouring businesses.
There are no reports of injuries.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
