CTV Vancouver reports that crews have suspended the search for missing 21-year-old hiker Liang Jin on the North Shore pending new leads on his whereabouts.
The disappointing news came Tuesday night after two days of intense searching in the area, where Jin’s Internet history suggested he may have ventured to on New Year’s Eve.
“He wasn’t clear on where he was going, he was researching a number of areas,” said Bruce Moffat, search manager for North Shore Rescue.
Jin, who also goes by Leon Joy, hasn’t been heard from since texting his father on Dec. 31 to say he was going on a hike. Unfortunately, he did not specify where.
Crews started scouring Hanes Valley on Monday, and were joined by two aerial teams on Tuesday. A total of 30 search and rescue members from Lions Bay, Coquitlam and the North Shore joined the effort.
Officials said if they receive credible new information on where Jin might be, they will resume the search.
Jin, an experienced hiker, is described as Asian, 5’6” tall, with a slim build. He is believed to be wearing a black Salomon brand backpack with white stripe on the straps.
Two aerial teams joined a massive search Tuesday to find a young hiker believed to be missing on BC’s North Shore.
Liang Jin, who also goes by Leon Joy, sent a text message to his father on Dec. 31 saying he was going hiking but hasn’t been heard from since.
Jin is said to be an experienced hiker that may have taken public transit to get into the area. His bicycle was found at his downtown Vancouver apartment.
His internet search history revealed the young man had researched hiking destinations across North Vancouver.
“We’ve got a few clues but we don’t have any point last seen other than his residence in Vancouver… no confirmation,” said Bruce Moffat, search manager for North Shore Rescue.
Moffat says the situation is similar to Tom Billings, the British tourist who vanished in 2013 after saying he was going hiking on the North Shore.
“[It’s] a situation where he wasn’t clear on where he was going. He was researching a number of areas,” said Moffat.
Crews scoured an area around Hanes Valley Monday to find Jin, but weather conditions hampered the effort.
On Tuesday morning, a total of 28 search and rescue members from Lions Bay, Coquitlam and the North Shore, aided by two helicopters, resumed searching.
Mike Danks of North Shore Rescue says it’s believed Jin has gone into a closed area that has received a large amount of snow in the past few days.
Conditions in the area are steep, and there is concern about the safety of the searchers because of an avalanche risk.
