Father of slain child speaks

The father of Teagan Batstone, the eight-year-old girl whose body was found in the trunk of a car in Surrey on Wednesday, has spoken out on social media.

Sharing photos of his daughter on Twitter and Facebook, Gabe Batstone wrote, “Life will never be the same after losing my daughter to murder. Our family courts and thus we all failed #Teagan.”

CBC was able to reach the grief-stricken father for further comment.

Batstone told CBC Ottawa, that he is devastated by the loss of his "beautiful daughter." He went on to say he had just returned to Ottawa after spending the weekend with Teagan.

Batstone says he divorced Teagan's mother six years ago and now splits his time between Ottawa and Vancouver. He says Teagan would also fly to Ottawa four times a year, where she would spend time with her two-year-old half-brother and her eight-year-old stepbrother.

On social media, Bastone has asked for privacy as his family grieves, but notes he will speak publicly in the coming days.

“Thanks for the condolences. I am unable to talk without sobbing but tomorrow I hope to share great memories of my love Teagan Erin Batstone,” he shared on Twitter.

Teagan's mother, 41-year-old Lisa Batstone, was charged with second-degree murder today after her only child was found dead in the trunk of her car.

Batstone made her first court appearance this morning and has been ordered to undergo a psych assessment.

The cause of death has not been confirmed, but an autopsy is scheduled for today.
